PATENT INITIATIVE TO PROMOTE AND SUPPORT LINUX. The Open Invention Network (OIN), a new patent initiative to promote Linux and spur innovation globally through access to royalty-free patents, launches. Investors in OIN include IBM, Novell, Philips, Red Hat, and Sony.

CA'S INGRES DATABASE BECOMES INGRES CORPORATION. Computer Associates (CA) partners with Garnett & Helfrich Capital to divest its Ingres open source database unit into Ingres Corporation. Ingres' status as an open source database solution has not been impacted by this news.

ODF SUMMIT SIGNALS MOMENTUM FOR OPENDOCUMENT FORMAT. The OpenDocument Format (ODF) Summit, held last week, included representation from over 13 technology companies and several industry groups. IBM has announced that it is drafting a proposal to create an OpenDocument Foundation.

MEDSPHERE ANNOUNCES NEW CEO. Medsphere Systems Corporation, an open source healthcare solutions provider, announces the appointment of Kenneth Kizer to the role of CEO. Former CEO Larry Augustin will continue to serve on the Board of Directors, and Kenneth Kizer will retain his role as Chairman of the Board.

PENTAHO ANNOUNCES OPEN SOURCE BI CONSOLIDATION. Pentaho, an open source Business Intelligence (BI) software company, announces that the Mondrian On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) project will join Pentaho. Julian Hyde, Founder and Lead Developer of the Mondrian Project, has joined Pentaho as an employee.
