SUN RELEASES ADDITIONAL OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE. Sun Microsystems announces that the Java Enterprise System, N1 Management software, and the Sun development tools are now available as open source software. Sun's open source Solaris operating system, along with a set of open source software form Sun, has been released as The Solaris Enterprise System.
IDC PREDICTS OPEN SOURCE TO HAVE GREATER IMPACT IN 2006. IDC, an IT market intelligence firm, releases its Predictions 2006 report indicating that moderate IT spending growth will accelerate the use of open source in the enterprise and encourage disruptive business models based on 'open innovation'.
FSF, SFLC RELEASE GPL REVISION GUIDELINES. The Free Software Foundation (FSF) and the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) release guidelines for revising the GNU General Public License (GPL). The FSF intends to release the first discussion draft of the new GPLv3 license in January for public discussion.
OSDL DESKTOP LINUX CLIENT SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED. The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) releases the results of their October 2005 Desktop Linux Client Survey to determine the primary drivers and barriers to Linux desktop adoption. Top drivers for Linux desktop adoption include user demand, competitive pressures, and cost, while top barriers include application support, peripheral support, and end user training.
MOZILLA LAUNCHES FIREFOX 1.5. The Mozilla Foundation launches a major update to its popular open source Firefox web browser, Firefox 1.5. The update to Firefox comes one year after the debut of Firefox 1.0, which has already surpassed 100 million downloads.
